NEW DELHI (news agencies) – India celebrated its 76th Republic Day on January 26 with a grand parade showcasing its military prowess, technological advancements, and commitment to self-reliance. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was the chief guest, marking a notable moment in bilateral ties.

The parade commenced at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, with President Droupadi Murmu taking the salute, accompanied by Subianto and flanked by the Indian President’s bodyguards. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, senior officials, foreign diplomats, and military leaders were among the spectators lining the ceremonial boulevard.

In a historic first, a tri-services tableau emphasized the “jointness” of India’s armed forces, depicting a battlefield scenario featuring synchronized operations on land, sea, and air. The display included the indigenous Arjun battle tank, Tejas fighter aircraft, and Advanced Light Helicopter, symbolizing India’s defense capabilities.

Mechanized columns showcased an array of advanced weapon systems, including the T-90 Bhishma tank, NAG missile systems, BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Pinaka multi-launcher rocket system, and the Akash weapon system. The 61 Cavalry, the world’s only active horsed cavalry regiment, led the display, followed by nine mechanized columns and nine marching contingents.

The Indian Navy’s contingent of 144 personnel highlighted its self-reliance with a tableau featuring newly commissioned indigenous combatants, such as destroyer INS Surat, frigate INS Nilgiri, and submarine INS Vaghsheer. These symbols of India’s progress in warship design underscored the Navy’s dedication to a robust and self-sufficient defense ecosystem.

For the first time, a 352-member marching and band contingent from Indonesia participated in the parade, marking a significant cultural exchange. This was the first instance of an Indonesian contingent participating in a national day parade abroad.

The Corps of Signals’ motorcycle team, famously known as “The Dare Devils,” wowed the audience with their daring stunts and intricate formations, embodying courage and determination.

The celebrations concluded with a breathtaking fly-past by 40 aircraft and helicopters from the Indian Air Force. The fleet included 22 fighter jets, 11 transport aircraft, and seven helicopters, such as Rafale, Su-30, Jaguar, C-130, C-295, and Apache, performing thrilling formations like the “Baaz” formation by MiG-29s.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) presented a tableau featuring homegrown critical systems and technologies, reaffirming India’s progress in defense innovation.
