WASHINGTON, D.C.- After nearly eight years of research and planning, the team behind the proposed India Heritage Center is preparing to launch an effort to establish a permanent museum in Washington, D.C., dedicated to presenting India’s civilizational, cultural and historical journey from ancient times to the modern era.

The project is being led by Atlanta-based Indian-American educationist and community leader Dr. Amitabh Sharma, who said the museum would be the first dedicated institution in the United States focused exclusively on India’s civilizational story spanning more than 11,000 years.

“Indian history and Indian civilization has never been portrayed in the strength that it deserves,” Sharma said. “It is important to tell the world about the rich civilization, heritage and contributions that India has made.”

Organizers envision a 20,000-square-foot museum featuring 10 galleries, a 350-seat auditorium, a library, reception facilities and a gift center. The museum would use immersive technology, virtual reality, augmented reality, interactive exhibits, murals and artifacts to engage visitors.

According to project plans, the galleries would showcase India’s civilizational heritage, scientific achievements, spiritual traditions, cultural contributions, periods of adversity and its emergence as a modern democratic nation. Proposed exhibits would cover India’s ancient civilizations, scientific innovations, spiritual traditions, independence movement and modern development.

Sharma said the museum is intended not only for the Indian diaspora but also for mainstream Americans and other communities seeking a deeper understanding of India’s history and culture. Organizers say it would help younger generations of Indian Americans connect with their roots and heritage.

He added that the center would highlight India’s traditions of coexistence, cultural diversity and refuge for persecuted communities.

Washington remains the preferred location because of its visibility and global reach. Sharma said efforts are already underway to identify a suitable site in the nation’s capital.

“We want this to be in the natural footfall of the people who are visiting,” he said. “First priority is Washington, D.C., and we have already embarked upon a very aggressive, interactive campaign to be able to identify a good location in Washington, D.C.”

Sharma said the team spent years collecting and validating historical material before moving forward with fundraising and site selection.

The India Heritage Center is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and estimates the project will cost between $12 million and $14 million. Organizers plan to raise funds through individual donors, corporate sponsorships, grants, crowdfunding and community support. (IANS)
