India Warns Citizens Against Joining Russian Army

NEW DELHI-The Indian government on September 30 once again “strongly discouraged” Indian nationals from taking the “dangerous path” of getting recruited into the Russian armed forces amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a fresh advisory for Indians travelling to Russia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the government continues to receive reports of Indian nationals being recruited into the Russian armed forces despite repeatedly highlighting the risks and dangers involved over the past two years.

The MEA reminded Indian citizens to exercise caution while pursuing job opportunities abroad and not get lured by offers from unverified individuals or agencies.

The ministry also warned that some Indian nationals have sought to give up their Indian citizenship, obtain Russian passports and subsequently join the Russian armed forces after being lured by temporary monetary benefits.

The MEA said it had also received information that they were being recruited to serve in the Russian armed forces by non-public entities, including voluntary groups.

In July, the MEA had said that 139 Indian nationals had been released from the Russian Army, while efforts were underway to secure the release of the remaining Indian nationals. (IANS)
