PM Starmer Talks ‘DDLJ’ As YRF Says It Will Shoot Major Films In UK
MUMBAI – A moment of cultural celebration unfolded as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the birthplace of India’s iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) ahead of its 30th anniversary.
Starmer was given a tour of YRF Studios by National Award-winning actress Rani Mukerji, who is also the wife of YRF head Aditya Chopra. During the visit, he announced a new cultural collaboration between the UK and YRF. The production house confirmed plans to shoot major films at locations across the United Kingdom starting early 2026, creating over 3,000 jobs and boosting the economy.
“Bollywood is back in Britain, bringing jobs, investment, and opportunity, while showcasing the UK as a world-class destination for global filmmaking,” Starmer said. “This is exactly the kind of partnership our trade deal with India is meant to unlock—driving growth, strengthening cultural ties, and benefiting communities across the country.”
DDLJ was partly set in London and told the story of second-generation Indian immigrants who fall in love, take a different path from prevailing norms in the 1990s, and eventually unite in India. The film starred Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.
Starmer’s visit also kicked off the 30th-anniversary celebrations of DDLJ, set to begin on October 20.
