LOS ANGELES, CA — Lara Rajagopalan, a rising pop star and member of the international girl group KATSEYE, has become the latest victim of a malicious and false immigration complaint—one that supporters say reflects deeper issues of racial profiling and online harassment.

An anonymous tip recently submitted to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) falsely accused the 22-year-old Indian American singer of living and working in the country without legal authorization. But Rajagopalan is, in fact, a U.S. citizen. ICE has not taken any action against her.

The complaint, which surfaced online with a screenshot and an ominous message, appears to have stemmed from a fan feud linked to the K-pop community. The tip read in part: “There is an illegal alien in LA known by the name Lara Rajagopalan… she has not obtained the necessary visa or legal status required to remain in the US.”

The baseless accusation quickly drew backlash from fans and fellow artists. Many pointed to Rajagopalan’s Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil heritage as a likely reason she was singled out. Civil rights advocates also noted the growing trend of false reporting and online doxxing weaponized against young public figures of color.

“This isn’t just an attack on Lara—it’s a reminder of how easily immigration systems can be manipulated through racism and anonymous vendettas,” said one prominent voice in the South Asian creative community.

Born in Dallas to an Indian Tamil mother and Sri Lankan Tamil father, Rajagopalan was raised between Texas and California. A multi-talented performer, she began training in classical dance, acting, and singing at the age of four. In 2018, she appeared in a video produced by Michelle Obama’s Global Girls Alliance, and in June 2023, she debuted as part of KATSEYE, a six-member girl group formed through a global talent search.

The incident comes amid a nationwide uptick in immigration enforcement and public scrutiny, particularly following news that social media personality Khaby Lame was briefly detained by ICE for overstaying his visa.
