WASHINGTON, DC –Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) announced $12 million in federal funding for the Northwest Seaport Alliance to help ports in Seattle and Tacoma develop shared electric truck charging hubs.
These funds come from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which Jayapal voted for and will reduce emissions for surrounding communities that are overburdened by air pollution.
“Washington’s ports, especially those in Seattle and Tacoma, are vital to our local economy and supply chains. Ensuring these hubs have the funds they need to build clean energy infrastructure is an investment that will go a long way toward protecting our environment,” said Congresswoman Jayapal.
“I was proud to support the Infrastructure Law and am grateful to see this funding heading to our state to build electric truck charging hubs that will serve the thousands of heavy-duty trucks that haul cargo in and out of our ports daily. This project will also reduce emissions, improving air quality for disadvantaged and overburdened communities that live near these transportation centers.”
This funding will go toward assisting the Northwest Seaport Alliance in managing a competitive program to develop shared electric truck charging hubs. These hubs will support a network of about 4,500 heavy-duty trucks that provide cargo-hauling services to the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. The project will also reduce emissions from an estimated 300 diesel trucks.
Jayapal, in a statement said she had written a letter of support for this project in 2023. Additionally, Jayapal has requested more funding for this project in the Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) appropriations bills. This funding has been included in the initial round of negotiations and is pending final passage of the FY24 appropriations bills.
