CHICAGO, IL – Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) was honored with the Champion of Freedom Award on November 19 at the Toast to Freedom event, hosted by the Free Jimmy Lai Campaign. The event, which recognizes individuals who have shown unwavering support for democracy, the rule of law, and freedom of the press, celebrated those who have fought for the release of innocent people imprisoned by repressive regimes.
In his acceptance remarks, Krishnamoorthi expressed gratitude to the Free Jimmy Lai Campaign, highlighting the importance of advocating for freedom and democracy in Hong Kong and globally. “With today marking the resumption of Jimmy Lai’s arbitrary and unfair trial in Hong Kong, we are once again reminded of the importance in not only ensuring Lai’s immediate and unconditional release but standing up for the values of freedom and democracy in Hong Kong and across the world,” Krishnamoorthi said. “I look forward to continuing to be a fierce advocate for the rule of law, freedom of press, and human rights in Hong Kong and around the world.”
Krishnamoorthi has also been a vocal critic of human rights abuses in China, particularly the alleged forced labor of the Uyghur community. On November 20, the Department of Homeland Security added 29 entities to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List, bringing the total to 107 entities.
Krishnamoorthi called the addition a significant step in the fight against forced labor and human rights violations in China.
