NEW DELHI – India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format of the game on May 7, marking the end of a distinguished red-ball career. The 38-year-old revealed the news via Instagram, where he thanked fans and reflected on his journey in Test whites.
“It’s been an absolute honor to represent my country in whites,” Rohit wrote, sharing a photo of his Test cap. “Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
Rohit’s decision comes just weeks before India’s Test tour of England, prompting speculation over his successor. The senior selection committee had reportedly been considering a leadership transition ahead of the England series, set to begin on June 20. Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant are among the names being floated as potential replacements.
The announcement also follows a difficult 2024–25 season for Rohit, during which both his form and captaincy faced increasing scrutiny.
Rohit concludes his Test career with 4,301 runs in 67 matches, including 12 centuries, 18 fifties, and a top score of 212 against South Africa in 2019.
Despite stepping away from Test cricket, he reaffirmed his commitment to India’s ODI team. (with ANI inputs)
