Seattle Artists Are Reimagining India’s Heritage Through Soul Jam

SEATTLE, WA – A sold-out audience at Seattle’s Royal Room arrived expecting an evening of timeless Hindi melodies. Instead, they were immersed in the life of one of Indian cinema’s most beloved legends through a blend of live music, storytelling, poetry, theatre and carefully crafted sensory experiences.
The production, ‘Madhubala: The Shadows Behind the Spotlight,’ went beyond paying tribute to the iconic actress. It invited audiences to look past the familiar smile of Madhubala and discover the woman behind the screen legend, Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi.
The performance also introduced Seattle audiences to Soul Jam, an independent artistic initiative created by Seattle-based couple Yash Patel and Arunima Agarwal. Soul Jam reimagines Indian stories through immersive performances that combine live acoustic music, storytelling, poetry and audience participation into a single narrative experience.
Rather than presenting songs as standalone performances, Soul Jam explores the people, emotions and histories that inspired them.
The idea grew from informal musical gatherings of Patel and Agarwal among friends in the Seattle area, where musicians discussed lyrics, shared stories and explored the emotions behind familiar songs. Those conversations, they said, evolved into a larger vision: creating performances where music, narration and poetry flow together to tell a deeper story.
While audiences experience Soul Jam on stage, each production is built through months of research, script development, rehearsals and creative planning. Patel, a senior security software engineer with a PhD in cybersecurity, oversees research and production design, while Agarwal leads the initiative’s creative direction, shaping its visual identity, audience experience and artistic presentation.
For ‘Madhubala: The Shadows Behind the Spotlight,’ Soul Jam brought together artists from diverse professional and creative backgrounds.
Storyteller and scriptwriter Nikita, active in Seattle’s Indian performing arts community, developed the production’s narrative after years of being fascinated by Madhubala’s life beyond the silver screen.
Pianist Aman Mahajan, a software engineer by profession, rediscovered music during the pandemic and joined the project to explore its emotional storytelling potential. Classical vocalist and tabla artist Yash Malpathak added a foundation rooted in Indian classical traditions, embracing Soul Jam’s story-driven format.
Together, the artists reflect a growing trend within the Indian diaspora, where professionals in technology, engineering and other fields continue to nurture their identities as musicians, storytellers and cultural practitioners.
The production centered on Madhubala, remembered for films such as ‘Mughal-e-Azam,’ while exploring the less familiar aspects of her life, including early fame, family responsibilities, personal struggles, illness and resilience. Months of research informed an evening where narration, original poetry, shayari and classic Hindi songs unfolded as one continuous story rather than separate performances.
Although the Madhubala production marked an important milestone, Soul Jam’s founders see it as part of a broader vision. Future performances may explore historical figures, mythology, migration, family histories and other stories that can be brought to life through music and storytelling.
