Trump Visits Gracie Mansion, Praises Mamdani As Mayor Focuses On New York

NEW YORK, NY-President Donald Trump made an unusual visit for a sitting president to the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, meeting the Democratic Socialist mayor September 21 during his visit to the city for the United Nations General Assembly.

The visit to Gracie Mansion came as a surprise given their sharp political differences. Trump, a Republican, has frequently attacked socialism, while Mamdani has described Trump as a “fascist.”

Yet the meeting was marked by a notably cordial tone, with Trump praising Mamdani afterward, saying he was “off to a good start” and “going to be a great” mayor. He seemed to bask in the company of the popular Mayor, hovering around him during the press meet and even wanting to take more questions from the media. 

Housing emerged as a key area of discussion. Mamdani has proposed a massive housing project involving 12,000 units built over a rail yard, a plan that would require federal assistance.

“What we’re talking about is something very rare in our city; it’s the possibility of constructing an entirely new neighborhood,” Mamdani said at a news conference following the meeting.

Trump has also proposed measures to address the nationwide housing shortage, creating an area where the two leaders could work together despite their differences.

Mamdani also raised his opposition to Trump’s immigration policies, including the administration’s crackdown on immigration and the withdrawal of Temporary Protected Status for people from countries facing turmoil, including Haiti.

“I shared my very strong opinions about how we can keep New Yorkers safe, how we can keep immigrant New Yorkers safe”, Mamdani said.

Trump, a native New Yorker, also spoke warmly about the mayor, drawing on his experience with previous occupants of Gracie Mansion.

“I’ll be able to say you’re going to be a great one, and you’re off to a start”, he said.

The meeting also touched on the Trump administration’s decision to restrict access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico. Mamdani said he believed members of the press should be allowed at the mayor’s residence.

Trump defended his decision to bar the outlets from the White House, accusing them of reporting “fake news” and saying he had an “obligation” to keep them out.

Trump and Mamdani had previously met at the White House in February, in another meeting marked by a notably friendly tone despite their political differences. (IANS)
