UK Disagrees With India’s Position On Canada

LONDON (ANI) – The United Kingdom has shown its disagreement with India’s action after the India-Canada standoff which resulted in the departure of 41 Canadian diplomats from India and called for resolution of differences through discussion.

In a press statement, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said, “Resolving differences requires communication and diplomats in respective capitals. We do not agree with the decisions taken by the Indian government that have resulted in a number of Canadian diplomats departing India.”

The UK further emphasized that the UK expects India to uphold its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Noting the removal of immunities of diplomats, it said, “We expect all states to uphold their obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The unilateral removal of the privileges and immunities that provide for the safety and security of diplomats is not consistent with the principles or the effective functioning of the Vienna Convention.”

The statement read further, “We continue to encourage India to engage with Canada on its independent investigation into the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.”

The US has expressed concerns over the departure of 41 Canadian diplomats from India and urged the Indian government not to insist on reducing Canada’s diplomatic presence.

  • Of course Uk disagrees. UK also has a load of Khalistani criminals living in UK.

    And why should India care?
    1) they are girlfriends of the USA
    2) they will invest in India in factories and take profits home
    3) they are future museums of what successful countries used to be.

    LOL!

  • “The United Kingdom has shown its disagreement with India’s action after the India-Canada standoff which resulted in the departure of 41 Canadian diplomats from India and called for resolution of differences through discussion.”

To me, it doesn’t make sense for a host country to dictate a foreign country regarding how many diplomats it can appoint to do the job because they are paid by the foreign country, not the host country. Of course, if the foreign diplomats are suspected to engage in illegal activities, they should be brought to the attention of the country the diplomats belong to. Also, a drastic reduction of diplomats can delay the visa issuance process which will hurt Indians trying to travel, study, work, or settle down in India.

The following is what I learn from the Reuters News article of October 20, 2023, “US and UK back Canada in dispute with India over diplomats”
“”Resolving differences requires diplomats on the ground. We have urged the Indian government not to insist upon a reduction in Canada’s diplomatic presence and to cooperate in the ongoing Canadian investigation,” the U.S. State Department said, adding that it expects “India to uphold its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

Britain’s Foreign Office also cited the Vienna Convention. It said “the unilateral removal of the privileges and immunities that provide for the safety and security of diplomats is not consistent with the principles or the effective functioning of the Vienna Convention.””

  • I think India acted under a knee-jerk reaction without thinking over long-term consequences. The big question is: where do we go from here?

  • As clarified by EAM, we are confiding with multiple points.
First is the issue of parity, both countries to agree reciprocally how many diplomats they can hv. It is mutual, who pays the diplomat is not the criteria. Just because Canada pays for the expense doesn’t mean they can decide. India has also accused . This is as per Vienna convention.
Second is the diplomatic immunity of excess staff. Once Canada has been told to maintain parity, excess staff after reasonable time, are considered as non diplomatic visitors . It doesn’t mean Canada can retain their excess staff for indefinite period. When India complied to Canada’s demand for withdrawal of Indian defense attache within days, why Canada creating an issue without complying with India’s request even after a month. India has also accused Canada of interfering in India’s internal affairs.
