2024: Indian Army Engagement Grows Globally

NEW DELHI (ANI) – The Ministry of Defense, in its Year Ender Review for 2024, highlighted the Indian Army growing global engagement, with around 5,200 military personnel currently deployed across 10 United Nations (UN) missions. These personnel include five infantry battalions and 11 formed units stationed in regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and Cyprus.

The review also emphasized India’s defense cooperation, with 118 countries now participating in defense activities with the country. As part of the ‘Aatmanirbharta’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, India has introduced advanced Made-in-India equipment into these missions, reflecting the country’s growing defense capabilities.

In addition to traditional roles, the Indian Army has deployed female engagement teams, women psychological counselors, and Military Nursing Service officers to support women and children in conflict zones. Trained yoga instructors are also part of the contingents, offering sessions for peacekeepers and local populations.

The Centre for UN Peacekeeping (CUNPK), India’s nodal agency for peacekeeping training, continues to train over 10,000 troops annually, supporting both Indian and international peacekeepers.

On the diplomatic front, the Indian Army has expanded its military diplomacy by increasing the number of Defense Wings from 45 to 52, with new wings established in Poland, Algeria, Ethiopia, and Mozambique. Additional wings are being set up as part of a reorganization effort.

India also participates in 39 joint military exercises, with more bilateral exercises planned with Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Cambodia, focusing on yoga and women’s empowerment.

Domestically, the Indian Army played a significant role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, deploying 83 columns across 14 states. These efforts resulted in the rescue of nearly 30,000 civilians, medical aid to around 3,000 people, and the delivery of relief supplies to over 13,000 individuals.
