ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Aikotaan Socal Association held its “Rabindra Nazrul Sandhya 2026” on May 2 at the Aliso Niguel High School Auditorium, bringing together more than 200 Southern California residents for an evening dedicated to the literary legacies of Rabindranath Tagore and Bangladesh’s national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The event celebrated their contributions through music, poetry and dialogue while also launching a new series of honors recognizing community impact and professional achievement.

The inaugural Bongo Bibhusan Samman 2026 was presented to Dr. Kali Pradip Chaudhuri, a physician and entrepreneur recognized for his work in healthcare, education and institution-building across the US and India. Dr. Sukrit Mukherjee accepted the award on his behalf from Kulwant Singh, Head of Chancery at the Consulate General of India in Los Angeles.

Other inaugural honors included the Sur Sadhana Samman, presented to vocalist and Surmala Music Academy founder Mala Ganguly for her work in Indian semi-classical music, and the Samaj Prerona Samman, awarded to educator and community advocate Dr. Seema Choudhary for her work supporting families in Orange County.

The program featured a panel discussion titled “Bridges of Words, Poetry and Songs.” Panelists Dr. Sukrit Mukherjee, Dr. Ratul Chatterjee, Dipankar Das and Jyotiska Ganguly discussed the role of literature and music in preserving cultural memory and strengthening community identity within diaspora communities.

A community food drive organized during the event supported Orange County families and encouraged attendees to contribute non-perishable food items.

The evening included vocal, instrumental and dance performances by the Aikotaan Cultural Team, and local talent.

Formal proceedings opened with a virtual address by Consul General of India Dr. K. J. Srinivasa, followed by a Shanti Path presented by Amit Maharaj of Bharat Sevashram Sangha West.
