Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra Announces $10 Billion Research Hub In Boise

BOISE, ID- Technology Chairman, President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra has announced plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade in a new research hub in Boise that will focus on memory and computing technologies for the artificial intelligence era.

The company has named the initiative Micron Research Labs. The center will bring together Micron researchers with universities, government, startups and other semiconductor companies to work on technologies that go beyond today’s roadmaps.

Research will focus on advanced memory, new memory and computing architectures, chip packaging and future semiconductor manufacturing.

“The decisions we make today will determine who leads the AI economy of tomorrow, and America’s AI future will be built on American-made memory,” Mehrotra said.

Micron plans to break ground on the research campus in 2027. The company has not yet decided where in Boise the facility will be built, but said it will be large enough to accommodate hundreds of researchers.

The campus is also expected to host research conferences, workshops and innovation forums. The planned investment will support university partnerships, satellite labs and other collaborations as part of a wider research network.

That network will connect the Boise center with Micron’s research and technology operations in the US, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan. The company said the aim is to bring its researchers together with outside experts and partners and help move discoveries from research into practical applications.

Micron said the initiative will build on nearly five decades of work in memory technology and its more than 62,000 lifetime patents. The company also plans to use the research program to help develop the next generation of memory researchers and technology leaders.

The announcement comes as Micron continues a major expansion of its US manufacturing and research operations. The company has separately announced plans to invest more than $250 billion in US manufacturing and research and development, which it says will create more than 90,000 American jobs.

In Boise, Micron is already building two semiconductor fabrication plants at its southeast Idaho site. Each project represents an investment of about $25 billion, taking the company’s announced investments in the Boise area to more than $60 billion.
