ANNAPOLIS, MD – On December 12, Maryland Democrats gathered at the Maryland State House for a significant moment in the U.S. presidential election process, as the state’s presidential electors formally cast their votes for the president and vice president. Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor, Aruna Miller, served as the President of Maryland’s Electoral College and took her place as one of the state’s ten presidential electors.
“This is an important constitutional responsibility, and I am honored to serve in this role on behalf of the people of Maryland,” said Lt. Governor Miller during the ceremony, emphasizing the significance of the moment.
This year’s meeting marked the 60th occasion that Maryland’s electors have met to formally cast their votes, continuing the state’s longstanding tradition of participating in the Electoral College process.
The event began with opening remarks from Governor Wes Moore, who officially launched the ceremony in the historic Maryland State House. Following the governor’s address, the electors took an oath before the Clerk of the Supreme Court, as required by Federal and State law. The electors then cast their votes in accordance with the state’s popular vote, officially awarding Maryland’s electoral votes to the Democratic ticket, with Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz as the recipients.
The electoral votes cast during the ceremony will be sealed and sent to the U.S. Senate, where Congress will meet on January 6, 2025, to officially count and certify the electoral votes from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This marks the final step in the formal election process before the new president and vice president are inaugurated.
