Aamir Khan Reflects On Career Choices: Passed On Darr, Bajrangi Bhaijaan
MUMBAI (ANI)- In a tribute to Aamir Khan’s contributions to Indian cinema, PVR INOX has announced a special film festival titled Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar. Scheduled from March 14 to March 27, the festival will feature some of Aamir Khan’s most iconic performances on the big screen.
The event was officially launched with a press conference in Mumbai, where legendary lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar joined Aamir Khan and PVR founder Ajay Bijli for an insightful discussion. The trio also unveiled the festival’s trailer, adding to the excitement among fans.
Akhtar reminisced about his first encounter with Aamir Khan, revealing a lesser-known fact:
“Aamir worked in the first film written by me. I was writing Faryaaz in Panchgani for Nassir Hussain. When I saw Aamir, I immediately told Nassir that he is a star and should start with a romantic film. His first film was produced and written by me. Interestingly, my son Farhan’s first film was also with Aamir.”
Akhtar praised Aamir’s willingness to take risks, highlighting his choices to work with new directors and unconventional scripts.
“Only Aamir could have believed in these characters and stories. He did a film with Ashutosh (Gowariker) even after a flop. A new director, Farhan, came to him with a film featuring three heroes, and he agreed. Who else would have taken on a role like Dangal, where an aging father loses to his daughter in wrestling? Most actors prefer working with established directors, but Aamir takes chances that no one else does,” he said.
During the conversation, Aamir Khan reflected on some of his career decisions, including opting out of Yash Chopra’s Darr.
“There was a film, Darr, which I was supposed to do, but I didn’t for other reasons—not creative ones. Looking back, I think it was the right decision because the tone Yash Ji wanted suited Shah Rukh slightly better. If I had done it, it would have been a different film. I don’t regret it because Darr was well made and successful,” he said.
He also revealed that he had read the script of Bajrangi Bhaijaan before Salman Khan was cast and felt that Salman was the perfect fit for the role.
“I had heard the script, but I told the writer, Mr. Vijayendra Prasad, that Salman would suit it better. That was my instinctive reaction,” he shared.
