Tariffs: Peter Navarro Loses It On X As Elon Musk Stands By Fact-Checking
India-West News Desk
WASHINGTON, DC – Peter Navarro went on a nonstop tirade on X over India’s Russian oil purchases—and Elon Musk didn’t back down.
Navarro, Trump’s trade adviser, raged that India was “profiteering” from Russian oil and that its tariffs were costing American jobs. “FACTS: India highest tariffs costs US jobs. India buys Russian oil purely to profit/Revenues feed Russia war machine. Ukrainians/Russians die. US taxpayers shell out more. India can’t handle truth/spins,” he posted.
X’s Community Notes immediately stepped in, labeling the claims misleading and noting India’s purchases were legal and aimed at “energy security.” The system highlighted a glaring double standard: the U.S. itself imports billions in Russian commodities while criticizing India.
Enraged, Navarro fired back, calling the corrections “crap notes” and accusing Musk of letting propaganda run. “Wow. Elon Musk is letting propaganda into people’s posts. That crap note below is just that. Crap. India buys Russian oil solely to profiteer. It didn’t buy any before Russia invaded Ukraine. Indian govt spin machine moving high tilt. Stop killing Ukrainians. Stop taking American jobs,” he wrote.
Musk, without naming Navarro, tweeted: “On this platform, the people decide the narrative. You hear all sides of an argument. Community Notes corrects everyone, no exceptions. Notes, data, and code is public source. Grok provides further fact-checking.”
Navarro has repeatedly called India the “Maharaja of tariffs” and a “laundromat for the Kremlin,” and described the Ukraine conflict as “Modi’s war
The timing is notable: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently appeared alongside China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, signaling alignment with leaders at odds with Washington.

He’s a puppet and will do and say anything that fits the administration’s narrative. Some people have no self respect or integrity.

Navarro has no credibility in any profession he followed in his working life. As a scholar at Harvard, he was a laughingstock among the students and faculty. As a faculty member at UC Irvine, most of his colleagues were intrigued by his tenure, and at the White House (Pagal Khana), he is a chief howler among the fools. Considering his training and education, no one is surprised by his pronouncements on trade policies. They are mombo jumbo meaningless trite.
