MUMBAI — Netflix India is set to make its debut in animated mythology with the upcoming series Kurukshetra, premiering on October 10. The show offers a modern retelling of the epic Mahabharata, exploring the timeless saga through the eyes of 18 key warriors, their inner conflicts, personal vendettas, and the immense cost of a war that pits brother against brother.
Produced by Tipping Point and conceptualized by Anu Sikka, who also serves as a producer alongside Alok Jain and Ajit Andhare, Kurukshetra is written and directed by Ujaan Ganguly. The series delves deep into the moral dilemmas and emotional intensity of the Kurukshetra war, presenting its characters’ internal struggles in a fresh, engaging format.
Tanya Bami, Series Head at Netflix India, highlighted the significance of the project: “Kurukshetra is the first mythological anime from Netflix India… it brings together everything that we look for in great storytelling.” She added that the epic serves as “a mirror to our choices and dilemmas,” and that this adaptation reimagines it in a way that resonates with today’s generation.
The series will be released in two parts, each comprising nine episodes. Adding further gravitas, legendary poet and lyricist Gulzar has penned the official lyrics for the show, bringing depth and poetic nuance to this animated retelling.
Creator Anu Sikka emphasized that Kurukshetra seeks to merge “timeless wisdom with the power of visual storytelling,” aiming to make the epic accessible not only to Indian audiences but also to viewers around the world.
