Shekhar Kapur Discovered ‘Severe Dyslexia’ Thanks To Daughter Kaveri

MUMBAI — Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has revealed that it was his daughter, Kaveri Kapur, who helped him discover that he has severe dyslexia.

The ‘Masoom’ director shared on social media that Kaveri once told him she suspected she was dyslexic. When she insisted they both take an online test, the results showed that while Kaveri had mild dyslexia, Kapur’s condition was severe.

“Some years ago, my daughter said she had dyslexia. Her teacher commented this was often a ruse students used to get more time for exams. My daughter insisted on doing an online test, and guess what? She was a little dyslexic … but to my amazement, I was severely dyslexic. And now it started to make sense,” he wrote.

Kapur said he has always been intimidated by forms and paperwork, admitting that he still panics when faced with them. “I am petrified of forms … The moment I look at one, I go into a state of panic. I thought I was just irresponsible and lazy. But how did I become a Chartered Accountant—and a successful one too? It’s still a mystery to me.”

He reflected on how dyslexia has influenced his filmmaking, saying his team often joked that he never read the schedule yet always managed to finish on time. “Till I accepted my dyslexia, I didn’t realize I wasn’t avoiding reading—it just didn’t make sense to me.”

Kapur added that many of his creative strengths may stem from his condition. “Perhaps some of the great creative moments I’ve experienced are not in spite of my dyslexia, but because of it. Now I’m amazed at how many brilliant creative people have dyslexia. Is there a link? I wonder.” (IANS)
