SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Indiaspora on March 23 released a new report, ‘India and its Diaspora: Partners in Progress,’ examining how the global Indian diaspora is playing an expanding role in India’s development journey as the country works toward its 2047 goals.
The report highlights the scale and influence of the diaspora, comprising more than 35 million people across over 200 countries with an estimated annual income of $730 billion. It notes a shift from traditional remittance-driven engagement to broader contributions through investment, knowledge exchange, technology partnerships, and global networks.
Drawing on insights from more than 200 leaders across 24 countries, the study outlines how diaspora engagement is deepening across business, innovation, philanthropy, and cultural exchange. It describes the community as a source of “capital, capability, and credibility” supporting India’s long-term growth.
“In 1991, India opened its doors to the world. Today, the world is knocking on India’s door,” said M.R. Rangaswami, founder and chairman of Indiaspora, in a statement. “At this inflection point, India has the opportunity to unlock the power of a 35-million-strong diaspora… as true partners in India’s journey to 2047.”
The report also reflects strong optimism among diaspora members about India’s future. Respondents expressed confidence in contributing to a vision of India as a leading global economy, a hub for innovation, and a country delivering improved quality of life while reducing inequality.
At the same time, the report identifies structural barriers that continue to limit deeper participation. It outlines recommendations for policymakers and diaspora leaders to strengthen collaboration and enable greater involvement across business, philanthropy, academia, and governance.
The study builds on Indiaspora’s earlier impact reports developed with Boston Consulting Group, including Small Community, Big Contributions (2024) and a 2025 report on the Indian diaspora in the United Arab Emirates.
