Justice Democrats Backs Saikat Chakrabarti In Race To Replace Nancy Pelosi

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Justice Democrats has endorsed former co-founder Saikat Chakrabarti in a closely watched congressional race in San Francisco, giving a boost to a candidate seeking to reshape the city’s political landscape with a more progressive platform.

Chakrabarti, who previously served as the first chief of staff to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, had initially entered the race with plans to challenge longtime Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi’s subsequent retirement has opened the field, setting up a competitive contest that is drawing national attention.

The endorsement from Justice Democrats, the group known for backing progressive challengers to establishment Democrats, is seen as a significant moment in Chakrabarti’s campaign. While Ocasio-Cortez has not yet weighed in on the race, the backing of the organization he helped found could strengthen Chakrabarti’s standing among progressive voters and donors.

Chakrabarti’s background in technology and activism has become a central theme of his campaign. Ryan Grim wrote on the site, “Chakrabarti, meanwhile, has the personal capacity to mostly self-fund his campaign. Chakrabarti was the second engineer at Stripe, and his stock options made him an extremely rich young man. Repulsed by the wealth inequality he saw around him, he quit Stripe before he was fully vested—an extraordinarily rare move—and volunteered for the first Bernie Sanders campaign, becoming a key player in the organization’s distributed volunteer operation.”

The race is widely viewed by political observers as a contest between competing visions for the Democratic Party. Chakrabarti represents a more movement-driven liberalism, while his main rival, state Sen. Scott Wiener, is seen as embodying a more institutional approach to governance.

Candidate and Supervisor Connie Chan is the other candidate who is facing fundraising challenges potentially limiting her competitiveness.
