MUMBAI- The Baramati Assembly by-election concluded on May 4 with Sunetra Ajit Pawar, candidate of the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction), securing a landslide victory.

In a historic performance, Sunetra Pawar surpassed all previous records, including the 2019 victory margin set by her husband, the late Ajit Pawar.

Sunetra Pawar won by a record margin of 218,930 votes. The victory is being described as the highest winning margin for any legislative candidate in India.

The election saw strong consolidation of support behind Sunetra Pawar. Appeals from her sons Jay Pawar and Parth Pawar, along with backing from various political parties and organizations, translated into a significant surge in votes.

None of the other 22 candidates crossed the 1,000-vote mark. Karuna Munde secured 125 votes, while Abhijit Bichukale received 121 votes.

With this result, Sunetra Pawar has overtaken the previous national record held by Sunil Kumar Sharma, a BJP leader from Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh, who had won by a margin of 214,835 votes in 2022. (IANS)
