Amaal Mallik Reacts To Music Royalty Row, Says He Battled System Alone

MUMBAI-Music composer Amaal Mallik has said he fought the Hindi film music industry system alone more than a decade ago without receiving support, amid the ongoing controversy over alleged non-payment of dues to music composer Tanishk Bagchi.

He shared a picture of himself along with a note. Though he did not explicitly mention Bagchi or Yash Raj Films (YRF), his remarks came as the royalty dispute involving the ‘Saiyaara’ title track continued.

He wrote, “People in the music industry waking up 10 years too late. Where were you in 2015 when I was fighting the system alone”.

Amaal has repeatedly spoken out against what he describes as unfair practices in the Indian music industry, including the growing influence of music labels over creative decisions, lack of transparency in credit distribution and royalty structures, and limited opportunities for independent musicians.

On July 18, music composer Tanishk Bagchi alleged that he had not received the royalty due for the title track of the blockbuster film ‘Saiyaara’, claiming he was yet to receive Rs 8 lakh in royalties despite the song’s massive success.

YRF responded by saying the title track was a collaboration between Tanishk Bagchi, Faheem Abdullah and Arslan Nizami, and that royalties had been shared equally among all three composers as per their contractual agreement. (IANS)
