Apple Tells Court India Is Overstepping Authority In Antitrust Case

The U.S. technology company Apple Inc. has approached the Delhi High Court, alleging that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) is exceeding its authority by seeking financial data in an ongoing antitrust case.
In a non-public court filing dated April 24 and reviewed by Reuters, Apple said the regulator moved ahead with proceedings while the company is challenging India’s antitrust penalty framework.
“The commission’s decision to schedule a final hearing represents an escalation in its efforts to usurp the Hon’ble Court’s authority,” Apple said in its submission, urging the court to hear the matter on May 15.
The dispute relates to a CCI investigation into Apple’s conduct in the iPhone app market. Since 2024, the regulator has sought the company’s financial information, which is used to calculate penalties.
Earlier this month, the Competition Commission of India directed Apple to submit the data and scheduled a final hearing for May 21, stating the company had been given adequate opportunity to respond but had not provided the required financial information.
Apple has said it could face a penalty of up to $38 billion in the case.
In India, iPhones have a 9% market share, up from 4% two years ago, according to Counterpoint Research. Apple has maintained it is a smaller player compared to Google’s Android, which dominates the market. (With Reuters Inputs)
