OTTAWA – Canada’s ruling Liberal Party has disqualified Indian Canadian MP Chandra Arya from seeking re-election in his Nepean constituency, citing concerns over alleged connections to the Indian government, The Globe and Mail reported. The decision also bars Arya from running for party leadership.

Arya, a three-term Member of Parliament, has been outspoken against Khalistani extremism in Canada. In August 2024, he traveled to India and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi—reportedly without notifying the Canadian government and came at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions between Canada and India.

According to The Globe and Mail, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) alerted the government to Arya’s alleged interactions with India’s High Commission in Ottawa, raising concerns about foreign influence. While the Liberal Party has not publicly specified its reasons for blocking Arya’s candidacy, officials with access to classified CSIS briefings reportedly found inconsistencies in his confidential disclosures.

Arya has firmly denied any improper ties with India, insisting his diplomatic engagements were standard for an MP. “As a Member of Parliament, I have met with numerous diplomats and world leaders, both in Canada and abroad,” he stated. “At no point have I sought—nor was I required to seek—government approval for such meetings.”

He has suggested that his removal was politically motivated, linking it to his vocal opposition to Khalistani extremism. “The only issue the Liberal Party seems to have with me is my strong advocacy for Hindu Canadians and my firm stance against Khalistani extremism,” Arya asserted.

The Liberal Party has since announced that Mark Carney will replace Arya as its candidate for Nepean in the upcoming general elections, scheduled for April 28.

Arya’s removal comes as debates over foreign influence and domestic divisions on India-related issues have become a source of concern in Canada.

  • Let’s be real. Liberals/progressives HATE Indian culture and especially Hindus. It’s so strange, because you think progressive/liberals would love Hindus. The Hindu American foundation is the only American religious organization that officially supports women’s, LGBT, and abortion rights. In contrast, Islamic organizations started to show their hatred against the LGBT population pre Tump 2.0. For some reason, liberals overreacted to the aftermath of 9/11. They adopted this idea that “Islam can do no wrong”. I never understood this fetishism over Islam, because Muslims do not support most liberal causes. For example, they absolutely hate the LGBT community. Progressive have been pushing the most progressive liberal religious group to the hands to conservatives, simply because of their bigotry. So sad, because progressives preach inclusiveness and tolerance, but they seem to have made an exception for Indians and especially Hindus.e
