TUSCALOOSA, AL (IANS) Nikki Haley, the rival and second runner to ex-President Donald Trump in the polls, came under heavy flak in the 4th GOP-sponsored presidential debate at the University of Alabama here. Voters get to choose their candidates in Iowa and New Hampshire in less than 40 days.

The smallest debate of the three so far, the Tuscaloosa one in Alabama University saw knives out for Haley amid her continued rise in the primary polls. Haley and DeSantis took center stage as they vied for a distant second-place spot to Trump remains the polling front-runner.

The debate, featured former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

On the sidelines of the stage, Christie took on Trump, while Ramaswamy took on everyone else with Trumpian-type theatrics.

Here are five takeaways from the latest Republican debate.

Haley takes the brunt: Haley, who has scored high in past debates, according to polling, was the main target of the attacks on Wednesday night. From the very beginning, Ramaswamy and DeSantis took on the former ambassador for her stance on China, social media, transgender rights, and more.

“She caves any time the left comes after her,” DeSantis said as he slammed her record. “Any time the media comes after her.”

Haley responded: “I love all of the attention fellas.” One opponent on stage, however, took a moment to defend her from Ramaswamy’s personal digs at her foreign policy chops. And that was former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

While most were afraid to take on Trump or attack Trump or dodged questions, Chris Christie stood his ground to attack Trump upfront and said he was unfit to be the president in 2024. And while defending Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, who as attorney general followed up on the cases after the 9/11 attacks, said: “He (Ramaswamy) has insulted Nikki Haley’s basic intelligence. Not her positions, her basic intelligence”.

Christie said, “Look, if you want to disagree on issues that are fine. Nikki and I disagree on some issues. I’ve known her for 12 years … and while we disagree about some issues and we disagree about who should be president of the US, what we don’t disagree on is this is a smart, accomplished woman. You should stop insulting her.”

Ramaswamy attacked Nikki Haley for being on the board of Boeing in her home state and alleged she was corrupt doing favors for the plane manufacturing company. After being governor of South Carolina and UN Ambassador, she should not have served the interests of the private sector by being on a corporation’s board. Ramaswamy said while also debunking the Biden administration’s spending on climate change technologies.

Nikki said she did nothing wrong and said Boeing helped her home state by generating more jobs and that she did withdraw from the company when any controversial issue arose.

Ramaswamy keeps up fiery antics: While Ramaswamy’s campaign has faded to the background as his polls remain at 5% nationally, the entrepreneur reprised his role as a disruptor on the debate stage. He was relentless as he went after everyone else. He again called Haley a female “Dick Cheney” and held up a sign that read “Nikki=Corrupt” as he questioned her authenticity.

Christie had enough of the Trumpian-style behavior of Ramaswamy, who tried to ape the ex-president to get this attention.  “This is the fourth debate that you would be voted in in the first 20 minutes as the most obnoxious blowhard in America,” Christie said as he pointed a finger at Ramaswamy voted one of the most heated exchanges of the night. “So shut up for a little while.”

Ramaswamy turned almost hostile when he asked Christie to get off the stage.

DeSantis defends record: The first question on the credentials and electability factor to be President in 2024 went to DeSantis and it was about electability. Moderator Megyn Kelly asked him for his response to voters who, according to the poll numbers that show his support has flatlined in second place, seem to be telling him: “Not no, but not now.”

As he did throughout much of the night, DeSantis made the case that he’s got a list of conservative wins as governor compared with Trump’s past defeats, media reports said.

“So, we have a great idea in America that the voters actually make these decisions, not pundits or pollsters,” he responded. “I’m sick of hearing about these polls, because I remember those polls in November of 2022. They said there was going to be a big red wave. It was going to be monumental, and that crashed and burned. The one place it didn’t crash, and burn was in the state of Florida.”

“They weren’t predicting that I would win the way I did, and I won the greatest Republican victory in the history of the state of Florida,” he said.,

Republican presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the others were participating in the News Nation Republican Presidential Primary Debate at the University of Alabama Moody Music Hall on Dec. 6, 2023, in Tuscaloosa.

Christie takes on Trump: ‘An angry, bitter man’: Moderators frequently posed their Trump-related questions to Christie, who has built his campaign on attacking the former president, unlike the other candidates.

Some of his sharpest comments came when asked about Trump’s “dictator” comments to Fox News host Sean Hannity on December 5 night. Christie said the remarks were “completely predictable” and called Trump an “an angry, bitter man.”

“So, do I think he was kidding when he said he was a dictator? All you must do is look at history, and that’s why failing to speak out against him, making excuses for him, pretending that somehow, he’s a victim — empowers him,” Christie said.

“You want to know why those poll numbers are where they are? Because folks like these three guys on the stage make it seem like his conduct is acceptable. Let me make it clear. His conduct is unacceptable,” Christie said. “He’s unfit and be careful what you’re going to get if you ever got another Donald Trump term. He’s letting you know … He will only be his own retribution. He doesn’t care for the American people, it’s Donald Trump first,” he said, drawing some boos.

Christie also called out DeSantis for not giving a straight answer when asked if Trump is “mentally fit” for office, accusing DeSantis of being “afraid to answer.”

Narrow policy differences: Ramaswamy was a lone voice advocating for the US to take a less prominent role in the Israel-Hamas war, calling his approach “pro-American” and “pro-Israel.”

“As your next president, my sole moral duty is to you, the people of this country,” he said. Referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he added, “That’s how I’m going to lead.

So, I’ll tell Bibi (Netanyahu), ‘You smoke the terrorists on your southern border, you go ahead, and we’re rooting for you. We’re going to smoke the terrorists on our southern border,’ and that’s how I’m going to lead this country.”

Slight differences were also apparent when it came to immigration and border policies. Haley didn’t endorse Trump’s plan to revive his ban on travel from majority-Muslim countries and said instead there should be a review of countries that have terrorist activity and represent a threat to the US DeSantis hit back, saying he’d go further in imposing limits on immigration to countries “hostile” to America.

  • Vivek did an excellent job of exposing Nikki as a corrupt individual with the limited intelligence to her credit she has picked up few things reading World Almanac about Iran and Syria. But her knowledge of foreign policy is slightly more than average than a school girl. Vlivek was very succint in answering the questions and he only got overboard after instigated by this extremely rotund Christy who was not only obnoxious but absolutely bullying not only Vivek but also the panel members, since he was ignored for the first 20 minutes. Christy, has no place in any debate or any higher office. The panel questions were very incisive and well researched and was impartial DeSantis was better than previous debates but none of them will be nominated. DeSantis has a future Beyond 2028 but for now Vivek and DeSantis have to wait till 2028 but as far as Nikki the polling figures are fake and her mediocre career is over.

  • She was the US Ambassador to United Nations and Governor of a state. Pretty much guarantees she can run rings around this idiot.
Vivek is nothing but a pump and dump artist (go look it up what it means and why)

  • Wall Street type money bags don’t ask Haley what her policies are but they dictate the policy and it’s absurd to rationalize their contribution since she’s a puppet and she can be controlled because she’s not that bright as DeSantis and Vivek the RNC is trying to defame Vivek since come he is coming out strong among the 20 something 30 something crowd who are never polled. Most of the people who are polled are the types who sit in front of the patio feeding their pigeons who have ample time for a poll. The fake poll conducted by Wall Street Journal that Haley is advancing his totall conflict of interest, it is as trustworthy as Morris the cat watching your tuna sandwich. Vivek was slightly tarnished because he did interrupt Christy couple of times . But that does not negate the fact that this man is a formidable candidate , he will not just go away because of Christy or Haley. The kid stays in the picture. Dictated but not edited.

As we can see, Trump still has a commanding lead over his opponents and he has had this lead for months. He is way stronger as a presidential candidate this time than he was in 2016. Christie learned his lesson from the 2016 Republican primaries when he discovered that Trump’s popularity ratings kept going up while his opponents were too busy fighting with each other. He is the only opponent of Trump who goes after Trump even though he realizes that this deliberate step doesn’t help him in his polls. But he is a truth teller and he cannot make the same mistake as the one he made in 2016 if he wants to live with his conscience.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Christie coming to Haley’s rescue when she was being bullied by Ramaswami. It’s not clear if he was helping out a damsel in distress or he was building a relationship with Haley whose poll numbers have improved appreciably, which gives her a decent shot at winning the nomination should Trump fail to grab it because of his legal problems. Christie can get a cabinet position if Haley does win the nomination.

I think Haley won all the four debates so far, although DeSantis performed well in the last debate. She is attracting a lot of corporate money in her campaign coffers, a lot of which used to go to DeSantis.
Ramaswami, “The Skinny Trump”, is smart and articulate, but his policies are too Trumpian in the sense that he is an isolationist, strongly believing in the “America First” doctrine. Just as a self-centered man can wreck his family, the “America First” doctrine can destroy the world. Besides that, Ramaswami is too mean-spirited and acts like a bully. We already had a president like that for four years. We cannot afford to have another one like him again. Ramaswami’s strategy is very simple. He thinks Trump will win the nomination and defeat Biden in 2024, and his loyalty to Trump will help him get a cabinet position in the Trump administration. I doubt if Trump will pick him up as a VP candidate. Trump will most likely pick a white female for that slot should he win the nomination.

  • Sean Spicer who used to be a PR guy now he has his own show and he interviewed Rama swami in front what look like a restaurant and this is one of the best interview I have seen Rama swami brilliance came across and he explained as to why he put up that play card saying Haley equals corrupt. Haley has serious conflict of interest that should be disclosed before the next primary or the debate the polling so far is totally untrustworthy because the only people that are polled are old white men sitting in a park bench feeding the pigeons or affluent people coming out of a restaurant or shopping mall and hardly people below 40 are polled because they are working and the polsters don’t bother with them and no one ever polls a minority person..There is a lot of discrepancy in the polling figures and also conflict of interest by the media. After ramaswamy criticized Rana McDaniel of the RNC she is after him and Christy is a plant in the debate to put down Ramaswamy and defame him and create an image where people think he’s a troublemaker that is far from truth this man has a courage to speak up and he’s not dictated by the money bags to restrain himself.. Haley came out like a retard with that blank expression like a school girl. She is not only corrupt but she will never be elected to any office. Trump is destined to be the president in 2024 and he might take Cary lake as his VP and as far as we Rama swami we have not seen the last of him and he’s a force to reckon. Dictated but not Edited

  • I have been watching presidential debates on TV since 1960. I still remember the first debate between John F. Kennedy and Vice President Nixon. They were all entertaining, informational, and educational, except the debates of the 2016 presidential election, those were very disheartening due to the fact that the most inarticulate, uncouth, yahoo won the election to the White House. I am glad that the most popular Republican candidate declined to participate in the pre-primary election debates. That decision certainly raised the quality and the contents of the debates for the remaining candidates. Currently, most Republican Party members are under the spell of Donald Trump. We hope the spell would be over soon as predicted by Chris Christie. Among the remaining four candidates, Nikki Haley clearly stands out more rational, reasonable, and respectful of the U.S. Constitution, political history, and diplomacy needed for the job. I am not convinced by other folks regardless of their Ivy League training and education. We will see; however, one thing is clear, the U.S economy is hopping, the lowest unemployment rate since 1960s, business and government institutions are thriving, and more Indians would like to move to America and leave Bharat, at the first chance they get in the morning. Thanks, the Democrats and President Joe Biden.

  • There is a concerted effort by RNC and the its puppet media to discredit , Vivek Ramaswamy as a radical and obnoxious candidate out of nowhere. This will backfire on them since the under 40 crowd has been energized in an unprecedented scale by Vivek, whom they consider him as their Messaih and spokesperson for their oppression and plight. The US elections were most part, in the past, were a hobby of affluent European males who dictated the outcome of the elections. That scenario no longer exists with Socisl Media and Ytube. The support for Vivek is across all demographics and race. The Caucuses are meaningless and out moded. Iowa is no longer representive of America. Hispanics comprise 30% of the voters and Black and Asians comprise 20%.. traditionally they have voted Democratic but not anymore, people are too smart and educated and astute to vote for a woman or a man who has not passed his or her CPA exam and funded by European males, qualified to run for president of the Free World inhabiting 350 million people, where as a Yale educated Legal scholar is not qualified ! Ramaswamy is the “Martin Luther King” of politics and politics Will Never ever be The Same after 2024. He has singularly lit the torch of revolution.
