Democrats Are Focused On Stopping Donald Trump: Ami Bera

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Ami Bera (D-CA) said the Democratic Party’s ideological differences are secondary to its broader mission of defeating President Donald Trump and addressing voters’ economic concerns, commenting on the growing influence of democratic socialists within the party.

Speaking on CNN, Bera said Democrats remain a “big party with lots of different ideas,” but argued that members are united by common goals.

“At the end of the day, this is about affordability. It’s about stopping Donald Trump. It’s about holding this corrupt regime accountable,” Bera said.

His remarks came after democratic socialist candidates scored high-profile primary victories in New York. The winning candidates were backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose own rise has highlighted the growing influence of democratic socialism in Democratic politics.

Bera downplayed suggestions that the results signal a fundamental shift within the party, saying some incumbents in heavily Democratic districts had not faced competitive primaries in years.

“If you’re running for re-election and you’ve got a primary, you’ve got to go out and run a campaign. You’ve got to energize your grassroots,” he said.

Democratic socialism has gained prominence over the past decade, fueled by Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaigns and the election of progressive leaders such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
