WASHINGTON, DC — Following Republican defeats in key races across three states on November 4, President Donald Trump acknowledged that the ongoing government shutdown hurt his party (the longest ever in history)  but, true to form, stopped short of accepting any personal responsibility.

Meeting with Senate GOP leaders at the White House on November 5, Trump admitted, “The shutdown was a big factor, negative, for the Republicans. And they say that I was not on the ballot was the biggest factor. I don’t know about that, but I was honored that they said that.”

A day earlier, Trump posted a similar comment on Truth Social, quoting unnamed pollsters as saying, “‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT.’”

But beyond Trump’s deflections, Tuesday’s results told a larger story: Democrats won decisively — not only in deep-blue states, but also in purple and even red-leaning regions — powered by an alliance of moderates and progressives.

Democrats held on to the New York City mayoralty and New Jersey’s governorship while flipping Virginia’s top offices including governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general.

California voters, meanwhile, fueled by the idea that Trump was gerrymandering House results stood in millions in long lines to deliver a resounding ‘yes’ to countering those efforts by having their own redistricting done.

Across the map, from Ohio and Mississippi to smaller city councils and judicial races, Democratic candidates prevailed, showing that voters were motivated by frustration with Washington gridlock, jobs lost and high prices on daily items.

Even as national Democrats remain divided over leadership and policy direction, the results signaled a public rebuke of Trump-era politics and GOP obstruction.

The government shutdown, now stretching into its 36th day — the longest in U.S. history — loomed large over the elections, amplifying voter discontent and offering Democrats a rare unifying moment. (with inputs from IANS)
