SCHAUMBURG, IL-Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi called on Congress to abandon a proposal tied to President Donald Trump’s ballroom project after the Senate Parliamentarian blocked the funding from being included in a reconciliation spending bill.

Krishnamoorthi said lawmakers should redirect the proposed spending toward deficit reduction and local community priorities instead.

“At a time when working families are paying more for groceries, gas, and housing, Congress should be focused on lowering costs and investing in priorities that strengthen our communities,” Krishnamoorthi said in a statement released May 18.

The congressman criticized Republicans for attempting to include ballroom-related spending in the budget measure, arguing the proposal did not reflect the country’s more pressing needs.

Following the ruling, Krishnamoorthi urged Congress to drop the proposal entirely and divide the funds between deficit reduction and community investments. He said the remaining money should support public safety programs, food banks, infrastructure improvements, and local projects that communities have struggled to fund.

“Instead of forcing taxpayers to underwrite ballroom-related spending in Washington, Congress should invest in projects that actually improve people’s lives,” he said.
