Mamdani Joins Indian American Seniors For Rakshabandhan

NEW YORK, NY- Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined South Asian seniors at India Home to celebrate Rakshabandhan, taking part in a traditional ceremony and sharing the festival at the New York City senior care organization.

Mamdani posted photos from the August 28 celebration, including pictures of women tying rakhis around his wrist.

The mayor reflected on the meaning of the rakhi in his message, describing it as a symbol of the promise to protect, support and stand by one another.

“On Raksha Bandhan, a single thread symbolizes a powerful promise: to protect, support, and stand by one another,” Mamdani wrote.

He also highlighted the sense of community at India Home, where South Asian seniors find care, companionship and what he described as “chosen family.”

“Today I shared in the joy of this ceremony with elders at India Home, where South Asian seniors find community, care, and chosen family,” he said.

Rakshabandhan traditionally celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, with a sister tying a rakhi around her brother’s wrist as a gesture of affection and a promise of protection.

Mamdani extended that symbolism to the wider community, describing the rakhi as a reminder of trust, responsibility and mutual support. He also connected the festival’s message to his vision for New York City.

“That spirit extends to our entire city. May we continue to stand by one another as we build a safer and more affordable city for all,” he wrote.
