Fox Poll: Majority Of Americans Disapprove Of Trump, Think He Lacks Competence

WASHINGTON, DC – Public confidence in the Trump administration’s basic ability to govern and the president’s own mental fitness has hit a significant low point, according to a Fox News poll released April 22.
A 56% majority of voters now say the administration is not competent at managing the federal government, a sentiment fueled by a near-total consensus among Democrats and 70% of independents. Even within the Republican party, 20% of voters expressed doubt regarding the administration’s management skills, a figure that doubles to 40% when looking specifically at non-MAGA Republicans.
Concerns regarding President Trump’s personal fitness for office have also intensified since the 2024 election. The survey found that 55% of voters believe the president lacks the mental soundness necessary to serve effectively, an increase of 7 percentage points over the last several months.
Further, 60% of respondents now state that Trump lacks the appropriate temperament for the presidency, marking a notable rise in negative perception compared to the 52% who felt that way just before his election victory. While his rating on possessing the right judgment remains improved from a 2016 low, 57% of the country still believes his judgment is lacking.
This erosion of personal trust extends to the president’s perceived empathy, with 63% of voters stating he does not care about people like them. This marks a sharp decline from 2024, when his empathy rating reached a high of 44%. These character assessments remain deeply polarized, as MAGA Republicans defend the president’s traits while Democrats reject them. However, the president is struggling to maintain the center, with independents increasingly likely to describe him as lacking in judgment, temperament, and mental soundness.
The administrative skepticism is mirrored in the public’s view of the president’s policy agenda and his hand-picked leadership team. Aside from a 53% approval rating on border security, Trump’s performance across all major policy areas is underwater.
Negative ratings are most pronounced on the economy and the cost of living, with 72% of voters disapproving of his handling of inflation and 66% disapproving of his economic management. His foreign policy efforts also face steep opposition, with disapproval reaching 60% for general foreign policy and 63% specifically regarding Iran.
