Hindus for Human Rights Endorses Progressive Vichal Kumar In NY Race

NEW YORK, NY – Hindus for Human Rights Action has endorsed public defender Vichal Kumar in his bid for New York’s 7th Congressional District, covering parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Announcing its support, the advocacy group described Kumar as “a dedicated public servant and an exemplary progressive South Asian” who will fight for communities “being attacked, vilified, and left behind by public figures and our political system at large.”

“HfHR Action is proud to endorse Vichal as he seeks to represent New Yorkers—working class, immigrant, everyday New Yorkers—in the United States Congress,” the organization said, adding that Hindu Americans “deserve a champion for dignity and a better future.”

Kumar, the son of working-class immigrants and a longtime public defender, welcomed the endorsement.

He added, “For 20 years as a public defender, I’ve stood with the families this system was built to ignore, fighting for recognition, equity, and fundamental rights,” he added, noting that his campaign does not accept corporate funding.

Kumar began his legal career at The Bronx Defenders while attending Hofstra Law at night, later building the Civil Defense Practice at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem. Most recently, he served as Managing Director at Partners for Justice, where he expanded holistic defense programs across multiple states.

Kumar is a past president of both the South Asian Bar Association of North America and the South Asian Bar Association of New York.

He has also received support from Unrig Washington, an initiative advocating campaign finance reform and the reversal of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision.
