NEW YORK, NY – Indian-origin political aide Huma Abedin, long known as one of Hillary Clinton’s closest confidantes, married Alex Soros, son of billionaire philanthropist George Soros, on June 14 in a ceremony held at a Soros family estate in Water Mill, New York.
Abedin, 48, was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Indian father Syed Zaynul Abedin and Pakistani mother Saleha Mahmood. The family moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, during her early childhood, before returning to the United States, where Abedin would eventually rise through the ranks of Washington politics.
The wedding drew a powerful guest list that included Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. According to the New York Times, other notable attendees included Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, socialite Nicky Hilton Rothschild, and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. The paper called the gathering a “rare concentration of wealth and power,” marked by private jets and convoys of black SUVs.
In a Vogue article published the same day, Hillary Clinton—who gave a toast at the wedding—expressed her joy at seeing Abedin begin this new chapter. “I’m looking forward to being a witness to their marriage… and to seeing so many longtime friends gathered in one place to really enjoy being part of Huma and Alex’s start of their married life,” she said. “And I think we all could use some fun.”
Abedin served for years as Hillary Clinton’s longtime senior aide and is often described as Clinton’s “second daughter.” She was previously married to former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner.
Alex Soros, 39, now chairs the Open Society Foundations, a $25 billion nonprofit founded by his father. The organization is one of the largest backers of progressive causes and Democratic candidates in the U.S.
Toasts at the reception were delivered by Clinton, Wintour, and Prime Minister Rama, media reports said.
