Huma Qureshi’s Thriller ‘Bayaan’ Set For World Premiere At TIFF

TORONTO – Huma Qureshi’s upcoming thriller Bayaan has been officially selected for the prestigious Discovery section at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), marking its world premiere on one of cinema’s biggest global stages.

It will also mark the film’s premiere at TIFF this September.

The Discovery section is known for spotlighting emerging voices in world cinema, having introduced celebrated filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Alfonso Cuarón, and Barry Jenkins. This year, Bayaan stands out as the only Indian title in the category.

Qureshi expressed pride in being part of a project she described as “strong and relevant.” Reflecting on her role, she shared, “Bayaan gave me the opportunity to play the kind of character I’ve long been drawn to—someone within the justice system, yet up against forces much larger than herself.” She praised the filmmaking team as “passionate and fearless in telling a story that feels both vital and universal.”

Directed by Bikas Ranjan Mishra, Bayaan explores the story of a woman caught in a complex struggle involving power, faith, and institutional silence — and her journey to rise against it. Mishra described the film as “an attempt to bear witness to a society in transition and to the quiet courage of those who choose to speak.”

The film’s producer, from Platoon One Films, noted the film’s global relevance. “TIFF is the perfect launchpad to start its journey around the world. At Platoon One, we strive to champion newer voices and stories that provoke, connect, and challenge — and Bayaan truly embodies that spirit.”

Bayaan is Mishra’s second feature and represents a significant moment for Indian cinema on the international festival circuit. (IANS)
