WASHINGTON, DC – Rajinder Kumar, a 32-year-old Indian national charged in connection with a fatal highway crash that killed two newlyweds, has been returned to Oregon state custody to face trial, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said.
Kumar faces two counts of first-degree manslaughter and other related charges, including reckless endangerment, in Deschutes County, Oregon. The charges stem from a November 2025 tractor-trailer crash.
ICE said it filed an immigration detainer with the Deschutes County Jail after Kumar’s local arrest. The county released him in April 2026 without honoring the detainer, according to the agency.
ICE officers later located and arrested Kumar before transferring him back to state custody. Federal authorities said deportation proceedings against him would remain on hold until the state criminal case concludes, after which ICE would pursue his immigration case under federal law.
US Border Patrol apprehended Kumar near Lukeville, Arizona, on November 28, 2022. ICE said he had entered the United States illegally from Mexico and was subsequently placed in removal proceedings. The agency noted that a pending application does not confer legal status in the United States.
