RICHMOND, VA – In highly anticipated races that drew state and national attention, Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh emerged victorious in Virginia’s legislative special elections on January 6, 2025. Srinivasan claimed the open Senate District 32 seat, while Singh secured the House District 26 race.
Their wins ensure that Democrats will continue to hold their slim majorities in both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly, maintaining what the party sees as a counterbalance to Republican power in Washington and advancing their legislative agenda.
Kannan Srinivasan, a former delegate for Loudoun County, expressed his gratitude after his victory, posting, “I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to continue serving our community. Thank you to every volunteer and my incredible team. Tonight, we celebrated. The 2025 Legislative Session begins, and we get right back to work!”
JJ Singh, the son of Indian immigrants, also celebrated his victory in the House race. He has served in the Peace Corps and worked at the White House Office of Management and Budget during the Obama administration. In his post-election message, Singh wrote, “Thank you House District 26 for putting your trust in me — I am honored to represent the community that my family calls home. I’m ready to get to Richmond and get to work fighting for our values and deliver for Southeastern Loudoun County families!”
Their victories were significant, especially considering the close attention the races received from leaders of both parties. State Republicans, including Governor Glenn Youngkin, rallied behind their candidates Tumay Harding and Ram Venkatachalam, framing the election as an opportunity to flip control of the General Assembly. National figures also viewed the results as a potential indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Both Kannan Srinivasan and Singh garnered over 61% of the vote, solidifying their position in two historically Democratic districts. Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Susan Swecker celebrated the results, stating, “Voters in Loudoun County once again rejected Republican extremism.” She added that the victories would help the party “continue passing legislation that benefits all Virginians while rejecting harmful policies,” including measures aimed at reducing daily costs, safeguarding freedoms, and strengthening the state’s economy.
Kannan Srinivasan, who immigrated to the U.S. from India in 1992, previously served in the House of Delegates before running for the state Senate in 2024 following the election of his predecessor Suhas Subramanyam to Congress. “I know Kannan and JJ will continue to fight for Loudoun families, working to lower costs, defend reproductive freedoms, and combat the rise in gun violence,” Subramanyam said, expressing confidence in their future efforts.
