India Abstains On UN Resolution Calling For Ceasefire In Gaza

NEW YORK, NY – On April 5, India chose to abstain from voting on a resolution presented at the UN Human Rights Council concerning the situation in Gaza. This resolution called for an immediate ceasefire and demanded that Israel lift its blockade on the Gaza Strip. India’s decision to abstain aligned it with countries like France, Japan, the Netherlands, and Romania.

The resolution, titled ‘Human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the obligation to ensure accountability and justice,’ was adopted by the Council in Geneva. It received 28 votes in favor, while 6 countries voted against it, and 13 abstained.

The resolution urged Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territory, emphasizing the importance of respecting international humanitarian and human rights laws. It also called for immediate humanitarian access to Gaza and the restoration of basic necessities for its population.

The resolution also condemned actions that could amount to ethnic cleansing and demanded the prevention of forced transfers of Palestinians. It also condemned the targeting of civilians, referencing a specific attack carried out by Hamas in October 2023, and called for the release of hostages and detainees in accordance with international law.
