India Becomes Virginia’s Top Overseas Source Of Visitors

NEW DELHI – Virginia Tourism Corporation is expanding its engagement with India’s travel industry after India emerged as Virginia’s second-largest international visitor market and its largest overseas source of visitors, according to figures released by the state tourism agency.

Preliminary estimates show that Virginia welcomed more than 65,000 visitors from India in 2025, generating approximately $112 million in visitor spending. In 2024, the state recorded more than 69,000 Indian visitors who spent about $124 million.

Heidi Johannesen, Managing Director of Global Markets at Virginia Tourism Corporation, said the slight decline in arrivals was linked to broader geopolitical developments and visa-related challenges.

Virginia tourism officials said they are working with Indian tour operators and travel advisors to encourage longer stays and greater awareness of destinations beyond the popular Luray Caverns, which many visitors currently see as a day trip from the Washington, D.C., area.

Christi Braginton, Director of Global Markets at Virginia Tourism Corporation, said Virginia offers attractions including Mount Vernon, Monticello, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and Fairfax County, but many Indian travelers remain unfamiliar with the state’s broader tourism offerings.

Officials said Virginia’s appeal extends beyond historical landmarks to include beaches, mountains, vineyards, culinary experiences, and theme parks. To strengthen its presence in India, the tourism agency continues to conduct marketing campaigns, media outreach, social media initiatives, and direct engagement with travel partners.

Virginia officials also highlighted events tied to the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, including celebrations in Colonial Williamsburg featuring historical presentations, reenactments, and fireworks displays.

The tourism agency said India remains a strategic growth market as it seeks to increase visitor awareness, overnight stays, and tourism spending in the state. (IANS)
