Indian Overseas Congress Criticizes Rahul Gandhi Detention, Seeks Inquiry

WASHINGTON, DC – The Indian Overseas Congress USA has called for an independent inquiry into the detention of Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, saying the events surrounding a protest in New Delhi raise concerns about constitutional rights and democratic norms.

In a statement issued July 21, the organization urged the Government of India to investigate the incident, uphold the rights guaranteed under the Constitution and reaffirm its commitment to democratic values. It also expressed solidarity with Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Congress leaders who were detained during the protest.

The statement was issued by IOC USA Vice-Chair George Abraham, who said reports and videos from the demonstration have raised concerns about the alleged use of force against elected representatives participating in what the organization described as a peaceful protest.

According to the IOC USA, the right to peaceful assembly, free expression and dissent forms the foundation of a democratic society. The organization said political disagreements should be resolved through dialogue rather than coercive measures, arguing that suppressing opposition voices weakens democratic institutions and could damage India’s image as a constitutional democracy.

Abraham said the organization’s concerns extended beyond the treatment of individual leaders to what it described as the broader implications for democratic freedoms.

“The true test of a democracy is not how it treats those in power, but how it treats those who question power. When the Leader of the Opposition and elected representatives are met with force instead of dialogue, every citizen’s constitutional freedom is diminished,” he said.

The IOC USA also urged citizens, institutions and civil society organizations to defend democratic principles and oppose what it described as any erosion of fundamental freedoms.
