India’s Solar Boom Fuels Green Jobs And Cleaner Communities
NEW DELHI-India’s expanding rooftop solar sector is creating a new generation of green jobs while lowering energy costs and supporting cleaner communities, according to an article published in ‘Saviours’ magazine.
As solar power becomes one of the most affordable sources of electricity in the country, its growing adoption is driving demand for trained technicians, installers, electricians, maintenance specialists, battery management experts, and energy auditors. The expansion of solar projects across urban and rural areas is expected to create sustained employment opportunities for skilled workers.
The growth of rooftop solar is also supporting rural and suburban economies by providing affordable electricity for micro-industries, including agro-processing units, flour mills, and grinding mills. Panchayats and local bodies can play an important role in facilitating these connections, creating additional employment and strengthening local economies.
In cities, residential societies are increasingly installing rooftop solar systems on apartment buildings, parking structures, and common facilities. The electricity generated powers lifts, water pumps, lighting, and security infrastructure, helping reduce maintenance costs as well as residents’ electricity bills.
Beyond its economic benefits, the shift from fossil-fuel-based electricity to solar energy is helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution while supporting national climate goals. Community-owned solar projects can also encourage citizen participation and improve access to clean and affordable energy for low-income and underserved communities.
A national “Right to Solar” policy, backed by supportive financing and community participation, could further reduce energy costs, strengthen energy security, expand green employment, and help build more resilient communities across India. (IANS)
