WASHINGTON, DC – Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chair Ken Martin has been elected as the new leader of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), securing 246.5 out of 428 votes. He defeated Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler, who garnered 134.5 votes, and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, who received 44 votes.

The race, which featured eight candidates, was widely viewed as a showdown between Martin and Wikler. Other contenders included Pakistani American Faiz Shakir, Senator Bernie Sanders’ former campaign manager, and longshot presidential candidate Marianne Williamson.

Martin, a longtime party strategist and early frontrunner in the race, addressed party unity in his victory speech at the DNC Winter Meeting. “We have one team—the Democratic Party. We have one fight. And the fight is not in here,” he said, signaling a call for cohesion as Democrats regroup following President Donald Trump’s return to office.

His leadership comes at a critical juncture for the party. While the DNC has reported record-breaking fundraising and investments in data-driven outreach, Martin will be tasked with assessing the party’s performance in the November election and refining its strategy for the future.

Martin’s election also marks a shift in DNC leadership. Since 2011, the role has been held by women and/or people of color. He is the first white man to lead the committee since Senator Tim Kaine.

The DNC’s 448 voting members, a mix of state and territorial party leaders, representatives from affiliated groups like the Young Democrats of America, and at-large members such as union leaders and longtime party figures, cast their ballots in the closely watched election.
