LOS ANGELES, CA – In a fusion of cultures and traditions, a unique performance is set to be performed on June 15. Vijayalakshmi, a celebrated exponent of Mohiniyattam, the graceful South Indian classical dance form, will join forces with Yuval Ron, an eminent Jewish sacred music composer, and Oud player, alongside the renowned sitar artist Paul Livingston.
This collaboration marks a historic moment as, for the very first time, Mohiniyattam will be performed to the traditional Middle Eastern Jewish sacred music, accompanied by the mesmerizing melodies of the sitar. The performance, at Mercardo La Paloma is part of the Summer Concert Series aimed at underserved and marginalized communities in LA, and is proudly supported by the LA Department of Cultural Affairs and the LA County Department of Arts and Culture.
Reflecting on the significance of Mohiniyattam, Vijayalakshmi said, “To me, the dance form epitomizes values that can sustain us, because aggression and violence have come to be misconstrued as power. True power lies in grace.”
This performance not only showcases the richness of classical traditions but also underscores their relevance in contemporary society. As Vijayalakshmi emphasizes, these art forms serve as a beacon of guidance, nurturing societal values and fostering unity.
Moreover, this collaboration reaffirms the belief that classical arts should be accessible to all, transcending barriers of economic status and background. By bringing this enchanting performance to the East LA community, Vijayalakshmi and her fellow artists aspire to spread the transformative power of art to diverse audiences.
Vijayalakshmi’s illustrious career spans four decades, during which she has graced prestigious venues worldwide and garnered acclaim for her artistry. From the Bolshoi Theatre to the Edinburgh International Festival and the Lincoln Center, her performances have enthralled audiences across the globe.
