LINCOLN, NE – In a historic ceremony at the State Capitol here, Governor Jim Pillen unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi on December 6, a date now officially recognized as “A Day of Remembrance for Mahatma Gandhi” across the state.
The bronze bust, a gift from the Indian government, was installed in the Governor’s Office, symbolizing a vision of enduring partnership and shared values between India and Nebraska. Governor Pillen, along with Indian Consul General Prakash Gupta and notable dignitaries, highlighted Gandhi’s global legacy as a champion of peace, non-violence, and justice.
“The statue serves as a powerful reminder of Gandhi’s enduring teachings and the universal values he espoused,” Pillen stated. The proclamation declaring December 6 a Day of Remembrance emphasized Gandhi’s role as a global symbol of truth and human dignity, encouraging Nebraskans to embrace his principles of non-violence, tolerance, and justice.
Speakers at the event, including Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly and former Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, reflected on the relevance of Gandhi’s philosophies, such as Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satyagraha (truth force), in addressing modern challenges. Acclaimed football coach Tom Osborne also attended, alongside members of the Indian American community.
The ceremony celebrated Gandhi’s contribution to humanity while fostering cultural understanding and unity among Nebraska’s diverse communities. As Governor Pillen noted, “This day is a call to reflect on Gandhi’s teachings and strive for a more just and peaceful society.”
