NEW YORK, NY -New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Bengali-language video promoting free Broadway tickets for high-school students has drawn attention from Bengali-speaking viewers.
The video is part of a campaign offering 2,100 free Broadway tickets to New York City high-school students through a lottery. Promoting the arts just as if it were an election moment for a political candidate, Mamdani pulled out all the stops.
The mayor has previously publicly used Arabic, Hindi and Urdu while addressing voters. Pushing for the arts among the young, he also released videos in Spanish and Mandarin, the latter he is known to have studied in school.
Mamdani’s Bengali video opens with the greeting, “Kemon acho, New York City high schoolers?” or “How are you, New York City high schoolers?” He signs off with, “Thikachey, tahole dekha hobe show te,” meaning “Alright then, see you at the show.” The Bengali-language message was met with an immediate and positive response from Bengali speakers.
Students selected through the lottery can claim up to two tickets covering seven Broadway productions.
