Modi, Zelenskyy Meet In New York, Discuss Way Out Of War
NEW YORK, NY (ANI) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on September 23, marking their second meeting in about a month. Following the meeting, a joint statement highlighted both leaders’ mutual interest in advancing bilateral relations from a comprehensive to a strategic partnership in the future. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties based on mutual trust, respect, and openness, and emphasized cooperation in upholding international law, including respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty.
India reiterated its focus on a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. Zelenskyy welcomed India’s participation in the June 2024 Peace Summit in Burgenstock, Switzerland, and stressed the importance of India’s involvement in future peace efforts. Modi, in turn, underscored the need for innovative, widely acceptable solutions to restore peace.
During a briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri noted that President Zelenskyy had requested the meeting, and appreciated India’s engagement on the issues. He clarified that the topic of India’s Russian oil purchases was not discussed. Modi affirmed that he has consistently promoted peace efforts in conversations with global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Joe Biden. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s recent visit to Russia was also mentioned as part of India’s ongoing efforts to support the peace process.
