NJ Author’s Book Introduces Children To Paryushana And Jain Values

NEW YORK, NY- Children’s author Priya Kumari turns to one of Jainism’s most important festivals in her new picture book, ‘My Paryushana: Festival of Forgiveness,’ introducing young readers to a tradition centered on reflection, renewal and forgiveness.

The book explores Paryushana through the practice of saying “Michhami Dukkadam,” a request for forgiveness for any hurt caused through words, thoughts or actions. The tradition encourages children to think about their actions and understand the importance of humility, accountability and forgiveness.

Through prayer, fasting and acts of kindness, families honor the teachings of Mahavira and the Jain principle of ahimsa, or nonviolence. The book also introduces children to values including empathy, responsibility and ethical living, while showing how kindness and forgiveness can strengthen families and communities.

‘My Paryushana’ is part of Kumari’s “My Festival Series,” which introduces children to Asian festivals and cultural traditions. The 24-page book is aimed at readers ages 4 to 8 and is designed for families as well as classrooms and libraries.

Kumari is a multi-award-winning children’s author whose books focus on cultural heritage, compassion and storytelling. Born in the foothills of the Himalayas in India, she grew up surrounded by nature, spirituality and books and now lives in New Jersey with her family.

Her earlier picture book, ‘Leaf Talks Peace: Buddha’s Message of Harmony,’ features a foreword by the Dalai Lama. Kumari’s work often introduces young readers to diverse cultures and traditions while exploring themes of kindness and understanding.

Urvashi Dubey, who illustrated the book, is an award-winning illustrator with more than 20 titles to her credit and has received multiple honors in India for her illustration and design work. Inspired by her Jain family traditions, Dubey felt a personal connection to the project and contributed both words and artwork to the book. She lives in Mumbai with her husband.

Published by Eternal Tree Books, ‘My Paryushana’ is scheduled for release September 1.
