WASHINGTON, DC –  US Rep.Pramila Jayapal and US Senator Mazie Hirono have introduced a congressional resolution recognizing library workers nationwide and highlighting their role in providing public services, education and community support.

The measure was announced after National Library Week and comes amid debate over federal support for libraries and related programs.

Jayapal said libraries and their staff help communities access information, social resources and educational programs. She also criticized efforts by President Donald Trump to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services and reduce funding tied to education and library services.

“Today, I am proud to reaffirm my support for these dedicated workers and thank them for the critical work they do in every community across this country,” Jayapal said in a statement.

Hirono said libraries represent values such as free expression, open access to information and community inclusion. She said libraries provide spaces where people can learn, work and gather, and called for continued support for the institutions and their employees.

According to the lawmakers, more than 350,000 public workers are employed across an estimated 120,000 libraries in the United States. They said library staff help connect visitors with books, media, internet access, educational programs and social services.

The resolution also points to growing concerns among libraries, particularly in rural, Tribal and underserved communities, following notices that some federal grants were being terminated.

Tom Fay, chief librarian of Seattle Public Library, said library workers make a meaningful difference in people’s lives by helping them access information, resources and a sense of community.

The resolution has additional backing from several House lawmakers, including Nanette Barragán, Judy Chu, Lloyd Doggett, Summer Lee, James P. McGovern and Bonnie Watson Coleman, among others.
