WASHINGTON, DC –  Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA)  announced March 26 that he won’t enter the competitive Democratic primary to fill retiring Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat, electing instead to endorse Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee instead.

“I have concluded that despite a lot of enthusiasm from Bernie [Sanders’] folks, the best place, the most exciting place, action place, fit place, for me to serve as a progressive is in the House of Representatives,” Khanna told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”

The Democratic field to fill Feinstein’s seat also includes Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter, who announced their bids earlier this year. Khanna had previously expressed interest in running for the vacant seat.

Lee, who announced her bid last month, is a member of the House Democratic leadership, serving as co-chair of the Democratic Steering Committee, and she was the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Through out her time in Congress, Lee has served as the co-chair and whip of the Progressive Caucus. And before coming to Washington, she spent several years serving in the California state legislature.

Khanna was also making news in the Indian American community prior to this when he expressed his disapproval of the expulsion of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Parliament, terming it a “deep betrayal of Gandhian philosophy”.

Hetweeted: “The expulsion of Rahul Gandhi from Parliament is a deep betrayal of Gandhian philosophy and India’s deepest values. This is not what my grandfather sacrificed years in jail for.”

Flagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tweet, Khanna said “you have the power to reverse this decision for the the sake of Indian democracy”.

The tweet came as a reaction to a New York Times report, which said that “the expulsion of Rahul Gandhi is a devastating blow to the once-powerful Indian National Congress party”.The report further stated that the senior Congress leader and “several other politicians are now in jeopardy through India’s legal system”.

Khanna has been heavily trolled on social media for his statement.
