WASHINGTON, D.C. – Journalist, author, and policy analyst Sadanand Dhume has been appointed senior fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a U.S.-based foreign policy organization.

In his new role with CFR’s David Rockefeller Studies Program, Dhume will focus on the region’s political economy and foreign policy.

Dhume is the author of the biweekly ‘East Is East’ column in The Wall Street Journal, where he writes about South Asian politics, economics, and foreign affairs. Most recently, he served as a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Earlier in his career, he worked as a foreign correspondent in India and Indonesia for the Far Eastern Economic Review and The Wall Street Journal Asia.

Shannon K. O’Neil, senior vice president of the Council on Foreign Relations, welcomed Dhume’s appointment in a statement released by CFR.

“I am pleased to welcome Sadanand to our Studies Program,” O’Neil said. “Sadanand’s distinctive experience as a reporter and scholar covering South Asia will provide integral insight into this important and dynamic region and implications for U.S. foreign policy there.”

Dhume is the author of ‘My Friend the Fanatic: Travels With a Radical Islamist’ and is working on a forthcoming book, ‘Tinderbox: The Unpredictable Rise and Uncertain Future of Modern India.’

His work has appeared in publications including Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The National Interest, National Review, and Wilson Quarterly. He has also appeared as a commentator on Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN, PBS, NPR, and Indian television networks.

Dhume holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Delhi, a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia Journalism School, and a master’s in public affairs from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs.
