WASHINGTON, DC – Shasti Conrad, Chair of the Washington State Democrats, has been appointed Associate Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), marking another historic milestone in her political career. Conrad, the first woman of color and youngest person to lead the Washington Democrats, will join U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty and Labor Caucus Chair Stuart Applebaum in the role.
“I am honored and proud to be named Associate Chair of the Democratic National Committee,” Conrad said in a statement. “Our party has an enormous responsibility to provide oversight and accountability to the lawless Trump-Musk Administration. Through our commitment to authentic candidates, popular economic policies, and year-round organizing, Washington state was the only state that did not shift towards the Republicans in 2024. I look forward to using my new role as DNC Associate Chair to help the Democratic Party become more like Washington state and less like Washington, D.C.”
DNC Chair Ken Martin praised Conrad’s appointment, highlighting her political expertise and leadership. “At such a critical moment, we are excited to have experienced, aggressive operatives who are ready to roll up their sleeves and defend Democratic values up and down the ballot,” Martin said.
Conrad’s political career has been defined by groundbreaking firsts. She is the first South Asian woman to lead a state party organization anywhere in the United States and the first Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Chair in the contiguous 48 states. Born in Calcutta, she was adopted by a single mother and raised in rural Oregon before earning degrees from Seattle University and Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs.
Before leading the Washington Democrats, Conrad worked on four presidential campaigns, served in the Obama White House’s Office of Public Engagement, and advised President Obama’s senior team. Her influence in politics has been widely recognized—Seattle Met Magazine named her one of the most influential people in Seattle politics, and the American Association of Political Consultants included her in its “40 Under 40” list.
With her appointment to the DNC’s leadership, Conrad is poised to play a key role in shaping the party’s national strategy heading into the 2026 midterms and beyond.
